Composed in the summer of 2021, the Suite sets to music the story of the forbidden, doomed love of the title characters, as told in the Symbolist play by Belgian playwright and author Maurice Maeterlinck. The fictional kingdom of Alemond – not bound by reality or time – here comes to life through an ingenious mixture of ancient dances, alternation of tempos and rhythms, and shifting timbre nuances, sound colours, and tonalities, painting a shimmering, captivating musical landscape.
Alexander Litvinovsky is a Belarusian composer who specializes in string instruments. His neo-romantical compositions blend classical forms and rich orchestral colours with modern elements, crafting a timeless elegance. Since the release of Le Grand Cahier on streaming platforms in 2017, he has been taking the classical world by storm and amassing millions of streams on YouTube and Spotify. With a reputation as one of the most gifted and inventive contemporary composers of classical music, Alexander’s works have been widely performed across Europe and abroad, and have been featured on the BBC Radio (UK) and ABC Radio Australia, among others.
Born in Minsk in 1962, Alexander graduated in Musicology from the local State Music College in 1982, and went on to study Composition at the Belarusian State Academy of Music under Prof. Dmitry Smolsky. He has attended masterclasses and workshops with composers such as Jonathan Harvey and Michael Nyman (Great Britain), Louis Andriessen (Holland), Martin Bresnick (USA), Sylvano Bussotti (Italy), Tristan Murail and Fransois-Bernard Mache (France).
