Joey Bada$$ has a couple different ways of writing songs. As the Brooklyn rapper explains to Genius in our latest episode of Verified, he sometimes likes to freestyle over a beat. Other times, he’ll grab a pen and paper and compose his rhymes while listening to a track. Joey used the latter method the night he recorded “Zipcodes,” a new single that has already surpassed 4.7 million plays on Spotify.

“‘Yo Kirk, let that beat rock,’” Joey remembers telling the song’s co-producer, Kirk Knight, when they were in the studio. “‘I’m gonna just get in my zone real quick.’ And I wrote the whole shit out.”
