The Sounds of Wakanda

Four years after the groundbreaking superhero film Black Panther arrived, Disney has returned with its long-awaited sequel, Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. For his highly anticipated follow-up, writer and director Ryan Coogler tapped Swedish composer Ludwig Göransson—who was also behind the first installment’s music—to score the film. The process began before the final script was even finished.

With Black Panther: Wakanda Forever now playing in theaters everywhere, Coogler and Göransson stopped by the Genius studio to have an in-depth conversation about the score of the film. The longtime friends and collaborators discuss tapping into new thematic sounds; drawing inspiration from trips to Mexico and Nigeria; and bringing in strong female artists to help emphasize the movie’s theme of motherhood.

All in all, the score wound up being an impressive unification of multiple cultures and genres. “It’s crazy that this music has been recorded on four continents,” Göransson says. “[We used] over 200 musicians, over 40 vocalists. Everyone comes from different cultures and everyone has unique, distinct sounds. But on this movie, we bring them all together.”
