Originally released by Jonas Blue and Jack & Jack in 2018, “Rise” has become an anthem to those rising above circumstances.
The Mzansi Youth Choir fell in love with the lyrics, aptly describing how, even when people don’t believe in you, you have the ability to just push through, work harder and rise from it. In a tribute to their fellow choristers, those who came before them, and those that will follow, the choir, in their very distinct style, are singing some of the lyrics in Zulu. “It’s about never giving up” - Mzansi Youth Choir

MZANSI YOUTH CHOIR:
The Mzansi Youth Choir was established in July 2003 with the aim of affording talented, underprivileged teenagers and young adults the opportunity to proficiently perform locally and abroad. The choir consists of on average 50 choristers (13 to 24 years of age) with outstanding musical ability from disadvantaged backgrounds. The word Mzansi means “south” in isiZulu and is also the township slang word for South Africa. The choir’s repertoire is an exciting assortment of South African music which incorporates elements of traditional music, pop and jazz.
Performance highlights include the One World Music Festival, M-Net Idols, Huisgenoot Skouspel, Starlight Classics, The Voice, The Presidential Inauguration, Dancing with the Stars, KKNK, The National Arts Festival, The South African Music Awards, as well as performances with the Shakira, Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, D’Banj, Beyoncé, Celtic Women, Wouter Kellerman, Lira, Khaya MtheThwa, Riana Nel, Vusi Mahlasela, Sipho “Hotstix” Mabuse, Dorothy Masuka, Abigail Kubeka, Jonas Gwangwa, Leleti Khumalo, Zolani Mahola and Soweto Gospel Choir. During the 2010 FIFA World Cup, the choir shared the stage with Columbian superstar Shakira and local band Freshly Ground for the performance of the official World Cup song ‘WakaWaka’ at the Kick-Off Concert as well as the World Cup Final. During 2018 the choir opened the concert with the Nigerian superstar D’Banj and closed the Global Citizen Concert with a stunning performance with world megastar Beyoncé in a packed FNB Stadium. This performance was broadcast to 180 countries across six continents.
International highlights include tours of Canada 2011 and 2018, Denmark, Egypt, England, Scotland, Turkey and Russia (Moscow and St Petersburg). In April 2017 the choir performed at the International Youth Choir Festival at the Royal Albert Hall and in the Royal Festival Hall in London.
