In today's short, we've compiled 5 facts you (maybe) didn't know about Johann Sebastian Bach. What was his family like? Who was his first music teacher? And was his music popular among his contemporaries?
5 Facts You Didn't Know About Bach
1. He was born into a family of musicians.
Most of the Bach family was involved with music. His father was a music director and some of his uncles and brothers were professional musicians.
2. His older brother taught him how to play the organ.
He was an incredible church organist. Bach worked in different churches playing the organ whilst composing his music. That's where he shone the most.
3. He had a total of 20 children.
He was married twice. He had 7 children with his first wife and 13 with his second wife. Only 10 survived adulthood and four of them became known musicians.
4. Bach was given a ring from Prince Fredrick of Sweden.
In 1714 Bach played for the Crown Prince of Sweden, who was so amazed by his playing that he gave him a diamond ring.
5. Much of his work was unappreciated when he was alive.
Bach composed over 1000 musical pieces during his lifetime. His work was appreciated only after his death, as people considered it old fashioned.
