Lucille Starr, born Lucille Marie Raymonde Savoie on May 13, 1938, in St. Boniface, Manitoba, was a highly acclaimed Canadian singer, songwriter, and yodeler. Hailing from a musical family, she began her musical journey in the Franco-Manitoban community of Saint Boniface, where she first showcased her vocal talents in church. Starr's family later moved to Maillardville in Coquitlam, British Columbia, providing her with an environment to develop her skills on the guitar, bass, and mandolin. Her early years saw her singing with the local group Les Hirondelles, setting the stage for her remarkable career in the world of music.
In 1954, she embarked on her professional career in Vancouver, adopting the stage name Lucille Starr. Two years later, she joined forces with country singer Bob Regan, her future husband, to form the country duo known as "Bob & Lucille." The duo caught the attention of A&M Records in Los Angeles in 1963, leading to a new chapter as "The Canadian Sweethearts." Starr's powerful voice and distinctive performances, particularly the bilingual hit "The French Song" in 1964, propelled her to international stardom. This achievement marked her as the first Canadian artist to sell over a million records.
Throughout the 1960s, Lucille Starr continued her carreer with hits like "Yours," "Crazy Arms," and "Jolie Jacqueline." After parting ways with the Canadian Sweethearts in 1977, Starr pursued a successful solo career. Her album "The French Cut," produced by Herb Alpert, yielded chart-topping singles, solidifying her status as a solo artist.
Beyond her musical achievements, Lucille Starr's life included personal triumphs and challenges. She faced an abusive relationship with her first husband, Bob Regan, and later found love and companionship with her second husband, Bryan Cunningham. Despite the hardships, she continued to captivate audiences with her energy and extraordinary voice.
Lucille Starr passed away in the early hours of September 4, 2020, in Las Vegas, Nevada.
