Fascinating Cowboy Facts:
* The term "cowboy" was originally used during the American Revolution to describe British loyalists who raided farms in the countryside, stealing cattle for the British.
* Don’t believe Hollywood: by the end of the 19th century, every third cowboy was a Mexican vaquero, and every fifth to fourth African-American. Now every third is a woman.
* Many cowboys were skilled poets and musicians.
* Cowboys often lived by an unwritten code of conduct known as "The Code of the West," which emphasized values such as loyalty, honesty, and respect for others. Tipping the hat was a traditional gesture of respect, and it was customary to remove it when speaking to a lady.
* While the iconic cowboy boots are still popular, many cowboys did and still do wear more practical footwear for the job, such as lace-up work boots. Also, modern cowboys don’t want to be mistaken for truck drivers.
