Beethoven started his 9th Symphony in 1822, even though he was almost completely deaf. Nature gave Beethoven many ideas. He often walked outside for inspiration. He was also inspired by poetry and philosophy. The 9th Symphony’s final movement, the "Ode to Joy," was inspired by Friedrich Schiller’s poem celebrating brotherhood and freedom. Beethoven pushed the boundaries of traditional symphonic form, integrating vocal soloists and a full choir for the first time in a major symphony. The 9th Symphony premiered in Vienna in 1824. Beethoven couldn't hear the applause, but the audience loved it. This symphony changed classical music forever, with its powerful message of joy and unity.
