Simple Minds is a Scottish rock band formed in 1977 in Glasgow. The group was founded by vocalist Jim Kerr and guitarist Charlie Burchill. The band gained international prominence in the early 1980s with their innovative blend of post-punk, new wave, and art rock. One of the most significant moments in Simple Minds' career came in 1985 when they recorded the song "Don't You (Forget About Me)" for the soundtrack of the film The Breakfast Club. Initially, Simple Minds turned down the song, after which it was offered to other artists, including Corey Hart, Cy Curnin (of The Fixx), Billy Idol, and Bryan Ferry, who all declined it. Ferry passed it on to The Pretenders' lead singer (and then-wife of Simple Minds' frontman Jim Kerr) Chrissie Hynde, who loved the song but set it aside because she was pregnant. Eventually, Simple Minds recorded the song, which became a massive hit. The track reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and helped the band achieve a global audience. Although "Don't You (Forget About Me)" was their biggest hit, Simple Minds have released many other successful albums and singles throughout their long career. Albums such as "New Gold Dream (81–82–83–84)" and "Once Upon a Time" are considered milestones in rock music. With a career spanning more than four decades, Simple Minds remain a lasting influence in the world of rock music. This live performance was taped for the Dutch TV program “Tafkas” on February 27, 1998.
