Rising singer-songwriter Mark Ambor has a simple yet effective strategy for working on new music. As he says in the latest episode of our new Clarity Sessions video series, created in partnership with Trident, he picks up his guitar, stares out the window, and just starts strumming chords that sound good to him.

“And then all of a sudden, usually a word or phrase comes to mind that I like, and I latch on to it until I just star building around it,” Ambor says. “I wind up subconsciously writing how I feel without really thinking about it.”

Ambor’s emotional honesty is apparent on his recently released debut album, Rockwood, which features the hit single “Belong Together.” The LP also includes the track “Good To Be,” a song about his dad on which he sings the line, “Hot coffee and a trident pack.” While some argue that it’s good to keep songs vague, so they’ll be more universally relatable, Ambor sees the value in calling out specific things—like his father’s love of java and cinnamon Trident gum.
