If you put together some visual elements and colours of Dario Argento’s Profondo Rosso and mix them up with the sounds of the Neo-Psychedelia, and then sprinkle on top references to northern European electronic music, you might arrive at something resembling Devil's Night: the track, that marks the return of the Italian producer Gae Vinci, after his debut release last May with his album Lonely Ballads.
Devil's Night is a song with a dark, thriller-like theme. Highlighting this are the guitar sounds, which are performed by, the now established live & studio collaborator, Tommaso M. Storari, and which transfer you to the 60’s surf rock with noisy fuzz pedals wrapped in spring reverb.
With an atypical structure, the production could almost be divided into three sections with alternating sound variations that include western bells and menacing theremins.
Even the lyrics, written by Gae, do not betray the mood of the song. Take “We won't ask for forgiveness, our sky is on fire”, for example. Even if the parts aren’t explained as such, the evocative imagery created by Gae accompanies the music perfectly.
Breathing life to the words, in a form of voice, is Misha Chylkova, a singer who refers to herself as a ‘Czech Londoner’, due to being born in former Czechoslovakia but having lived in London all her adult life. Misha, who has now found her home in Italy, is also the lead singer in Gae’s new band. Devil's Night is her and Gae’s first studio collaboration.
