Achille Claude Debussy was born in the outskirts of Paris in 1862. He is recognised as one of the chief exponents, alongside Ravel, of musical impressionism, despite himself rejecting the term. He remains nonetheless one of the most influential, modernist composers of the late 19th and early 20th century, developing a distinctive style rooted in French culture and artistic tradition, partly in reaction to the impact of Wagner and German music more broadly on the mid-to-late 19th century music panorama. He is most popularly known for his piano pieces, such as his “Rêverie” and “Clair de Lune” (from his Suite Bergamasque), but his oeuvre extends beyond the confines of this instrument, including Pelléas et Mélisande, Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune (1894), Nocturnes (1897–1899), Images (1905–1912), La mer (1903–1905), as well as a number of posthumously completed ballets. He died in 1918, during the First World War and the bombardment of Paris. The following year he was put to rest in a small cemetery “among the trees and the birds.”
