Classical Music Inspired by Myths and Legends

The link between storytelling and music is an indissoluble one, and ever since the Renaissance’s rediscovery of ancient myths, composers have taken inspiration from or dedicated themselves to retelling all manner of legends and folktales.
This selection is a treasure trove of some of the greatest classical pieces inspired by or retelling a huge breadth of myths, legend, epics and sagas, as well as fairy and folktales such as Grieg’s fantastic and fantastical Peer Gynt, Mozart’s opera il Re Pastore (the Shepherd King), the feverish sabbath of Mussorgsky’s Night on Bald Mountain, with its final triumph of morning’s light over the darkness, the classical graeco-roman myths of Orpheus & Eurydice and of Pan & Syrinx, the germanic legend of the valkyries, transporting the souls of the heroic dead to Valhalla, immortalised (no pun intended) in their ride from Wagner’s Der Ring Des Nibelungen (the Ring Cycle, retelling sagas such as the Nibelungenlied), as well as the rhythmic and sonic revolutions of the imagined pagan, Bronze Age or Pre-Historic Russian rituals of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring.
