We take the opportunity to thank the Orquestra Reino de Aragón and its conductor, Ricardo Casero, for this Live performance. Below, you can read a few, brief programme notes: some information about the piece and our fantastic performers, as well as a short biography of the composer. We hope you enjoy.
Mendelssohn’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream Overture.
The overture to A Midsummer Night’s Dream began its life as the Concert Overture in E major (Op. 21), in 1826, when Mendelssohn was only 17. Years later, in 1842, he included it as the overture of his incidental music for Shakespeare’s play (on the request of King Frederick William IV of Prussia), which also includes the famous Wedding March, Scherzo, and Nocturne.

Mendelssohn.
Born Jakob Ludwig Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in 1809, Felix Mendelssohn is one of the most significant composers of the romantic period, managing perhaps more than anyone else to marry the expressive impulses of the era with the form and control of the classical period. His most famous works include his Symphonies No.s 3, 4, and 5 (the “Scottish” in A minor, “Italian” in A major, and “Reformation” in D major/minor), the A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Elijah, and Hebrides overtures, Violin Concerto in E minor, and his Songs Without Words for solo piano. On top of his fame as a composer, Mendelssohn was a celebrated performer of both the piano and organ, and through his performance of others’ works, he notably contributed to the rediscovery and revival of past composers, including most notably Bach and Schubert. He was also the grandson of the famous Jewish philosopher, Moses Mendelssohn.
