Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev was born in 1891 in Sontsovka, in present-day Ukraine. A child prodigy both as a pianist and composer, he studied at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory under masters including Rimsky-Korsakov, quickly earning a reputation as an enfant terrible for his bold, unconventional writing — blending formal rigour, Russian tradition, and a sharply modern sensibility. After years spent in Europe and the United States, where he made his international name with works such as his early piano concertos and the First "Classical" Symphony, he returned to the Soviet Union and composed some of his most celebrated pieces: the ballet Romeo and Juliet, the children's tale Peter and the Wolf, and the film score for Eisenstein's Alexander Nevsky. His final years were shadowed by Soviet cultural pressure and failing health. He died in Moscow on 5 March 1953 — the same day as Stalin — and is buried at Novodevichy Cemetery, remembered as one of the defining voices of twentieth-century classical music.
