The Best of Brahms

Johannes Brahms (7 May 1833 – 3 April 1897) was a German composer and virtuoso pianist whose music bridged Classical architecture and Romantic expression. Born in Hamburg to a modest musical family, he earned money in waterfront taverns before Robert and Clara Schumann championed his genius in 1853. Settling in Vienna in 1863, Brahms became a conductor and outspoken advocate for “absolute” music during the Wagner-Brahms aesthetic debates.
He labored for years over his Symphony No. 1, finally unveiling it in 1876, and it swiftly placed him alongside Beethoven in public esteem. Four symphonies, two spacious piano concertos, a monumental German Requiem, and abundant chamber works display his contrapuntal skill, folkloric rhythms, and firm lyricism.
Late in life he penned luminous miniatures such as the Clarinet Quintet and Intermezzi, then quietly succumbed to cancer in Vienna, leaving a legacy revered among the celebrated “three Bs”: Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms.
