The Best of Dvořák

Antonín Dvořák (8 September 1841 – 1 May 1904) was a Czech composer whose music fuses classical structure with Bohemian folk melodies and dance rhythms. Raised in Nelahozeves, he trained in Prague while earning his living as a church organist and theatre violist. International notice arrived in 1877 when Johannes Brahms championed his scores and secured a Berlin publishing contract, and the effervescent Slavonic Dances soon brought him widespread fame. Dvořák produced nine symphonies, choral masterworks such as the poignant Stabat Mater, the opera Rusalka, and abundant chamber music, all marked by soaring lyricism and vibrant colour. From 1892 to 1895 he directed the National Conservatory in New York, urging Americans to mine spirituals and Indigenous tunes and composing his iconic Symphony No. 9 “From the New World”. Back in Prague he wrote symphonic poems and the celebrated Cello Concerto, becoming director of the Conservatory in 1901. He died of a stroke in 1904, venerated as a national voice of universal resonance.
