It’s a rare vocal group that gets credit for a huge instrumental hit, but that was how *Archie Bell & the Drells*, famously from Houston, Texas, attained immortality. Bell, the second of seven sons, was singing in public by age 10, inspired by Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke. He organized the Drells, a quartet, with friends including Billy Butler, while in middle school. The Drells signed with Houston label Ovide in 1967, collaborating onstage and in the studio with instrumental unit the T.S.U. Tornadoes. That October, with the Vietnam War raging, Bell, 23, was drafted, to his great dismay. To cheer up his long-time pal, Butler demonstrated the exuberant “Tighten Up” dance step. The two subsequently worked out the riff that the Tornadoes expanded into an irresistibly upbeat instrumental distributed by Atlantic (Bell was drafted but was stationed in Germany). At first a local and then a regional hit, “Tighten Up” soon broke nationwide, earning a gold record and zooming to #1, perhaps the song of the summer of 1968. Bell and associates, working with future legendary producers and songwriters Kenneth Gamble and Leon Huff, then delivered the LP I Can’t Stop Dancing (in 1969, Todd Rundgren and the Nazz released a good-natured parody that the Philadelphia outfit titled “The Loosen Up” on the LP Nazz III). The Drells kept on tightening up with the T.S.U. Tornadoes into the 1970s. For the next half-century, Archie Bell continued to perform and record, charting with singles like “I Can’t Stop Dancing,” “Showdown,” and “Do the Choo Choo” and venturing into the blues and country music. -- Michael Dolan
