Boy King Islands - Are We Where from Tell Can't We

Are We Where From Tell Can't We was created from reversed slices of the older Boy King Islands song "We Can't Tell From Where We Are," intended originally as a reference Zachary Mastoon of Boy King Islands used to re-record and build its outro. As he composed guitar and vocal parts to match these stolen moments, he found myself falling in love with the source audio itself and wanted to share it as a stand-alone work. Mirroring this philosophy of finding form in reflection, our video's character remembers her day in reverse, ominously foreshadowing it may be her last.

According to director Greg Stephen Reigh, this video is an experiment in editing and crafting a story through random "found" footage. While on a vacation in Los Angeles he purchased a new camera and naturally began putting it through its paces and gathering footage of friends. Near the end of his trip, Zachary contacted him about potentially putting together a small piece for his upcoming album, and so Greg decided to repurpose the footage, and shoot one extra scene in the LA river, in an attempt to create a melancholy and foreboding atmosphere out of otherwise cheerful and fun footage of friends hanging out.
