The Best of Stravinsky

Igor Stravinsky (1882–1971) was a Russian composer and conductor—widely regarded as one of the most influential and versatile musical figures of the 20th century. Early training under Rimsky-Korsakov evolved into a revolutionary approach marked by rhythmic vitality, bold harmonic language, innovative orchestration, and a chameleonic ability to reinvent his style across multiple periods.
Born near St. Petersburg into a musical family, he studied law before turning fully to composition under Rimsky-Korsakov's guidance. His breakthrough came with three ballets for Diaghilev's Ballets Russes: The Firebird (1910), Petrushka (1911), and the scandalous The Rite of Spring (1913), whose premiere sparked a riot but redefined modern music.
After the Russian Revolution, he settled in France (1920), adopting a neoclassical idiom that dominated works like Pulcinella (1920) and the opera-oratorio Oedipus Rex (1927). He became a French citizen in 1934, then moved to the United States in 1939, eventually settling in Los Angeles.
In America, he continued conducting and composing prolifically, embracing serialism in his late works while maintaining his distinctive voice. He became a U.S. citizen in 1945 and spent his final decades in Hollywood, remaining creatively active until his death in New York in 1971.
