As performers of propulsive, elegant soul, *The Persuaders*, a quartet of emotive harmoneers whose original roster formed during the late 1960s in New York City, stand tall. Their riveting sound hinges on the contrast between lead singer Douglas Scott’s heartfelt delivery and ultra-smooth support by James Barnes, Charles Stodghill, and Willie Holland. Charting in 1971 with the outfit’s freshman Atlantic-Atco single, “A Thin Line (Between Love and Hate)”, exquisitely produced by brothers Richard and Bobby Poindexter, who with Richard’s wife, songwriter Jackie Members, wrote the song. For that tuneful yet harrowing portrayal of romance gone wrong at its murderous worst, the group collected a gold record. Continuing their alliance with the Poindexters and Members, they scored hits with dramatic 45s “Love Gonna Pack Up and Walk Out,” If This Is What You Call Love (I Don’t Want No Part of It,” and “Some Guys Have All the Luck.” Perhaps reflecting the rise of gender equality even when it comes to cheating hearts, Chryssie Hynde of the Pretenders, Annie Lennox, and Trish Toledo have covered “Thin Line,” which has been featured regularly in film soundtracks. Love for the Persuaders runs so deep that even the original members’ passings couldn’t still the ensemble; new generations of vocalists staff two different quartets that tour as The Persuaders. —Michael Dolan
