The Best of Telemann - the Baroque's Hidden Gem
Georg Philipp Telemann (14 March 1681 – 25 June 1767) was a German composer whose vast output bridged the late Baroque and the early Classical era, blending Italian, French, and Polish influences into a distinctly German voice. Largely self-taught, he studied law at Leipzig before music claimed him entirely: he founded a student Collegium Musicum, directed the city's opera house, and never looked back. Successive posts in Sorau, Eisenach — where he befriended Johann Sebastian Bach — and Frankfurt sharpened his command of contrasting national styles, while a celebrated visit to Paris in 1737 won him the admiration of French audiences. From 1721 until his death he served as music director of Hamburg's five major churches, shaping the city's musical life for nearly half a century. His catalogue of over three thousand works — cantatas, oratorios, concertos, suites, and operas, among them the sparkling intermezzo Pimpinone — earned him recognition as the most prolific composer in history. Godfather to Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, who succeeded him in Hamburg, Telemann died in 1767 at eighty-six, celebrated in his own lifetime as the foremost German musician of his age.
