Jerome Louis “J.J.” Jackson is a multifaceted, prolific singer, arranger, and songwriter best known for his R&B hit “But It’s Alright.” The tune, which he co-wrote with Pierre Tubbs, charted in 1966 and 1969 as well as enjoying recurring popularity in various markets and in different versions. Born in the Bronx, New York, in 1942, Jackson notched his first songwriting credit at 16 with a b-side to Billy Williams’s 1957 hit “Got a Date With an Angel.” His first 45, in 1963, presented his own compositions “Shy Guy” and “Time.” He became a regular on the NYC studio musician circuit as a pianist. He and collaborator Sidney Barnes, working for multiple labels, fashioned material for Mary Wells, Inez and Charlie Fox, the Jive Five, and the Shangri-Las, among many others. In 1965 Jackson debuted as a performer, leading to his massive hit “But It’s Alright,” which he recorded in Britain and which peaked at 22 on the Billboard chart. “Alright” was covered by Brother Jack McDuff and David “Fathead” Newman as well Eddie Floyd. Signed to Warner unit Loma Records in 1968, Jackson released a stream of singles but charted again most forcefully when Warner re-released “But It’s Alright” in March 1969, with a Spanish version soon following. Jackson, now a permanent resident of England, went on to a busy recording career in the U.K. until 1975, when he pivoted onto the burgeoning market for oldies cavalcade concerts. In the 1980s and again in the ‘90s covers of “But It’s Alright” burbled into the world’s ear courtesy of Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons and Huey Lewis and the News. Jackson’s early recordings have been repackaged and rereleased. He is still living in the U.K.—Michael Dolan
