Despite or perhaps thanks to revolving-door personnel changes, The Spinners have sought and achieved commercial and artistic success through the decades and across multiple musical eras. Formed in 1954 as The Domingoes, the Detroit-bred vocal quintet renamed themselves in 1961, and as The Spinners that year charted with “That’s What Girls are Made For.” Working with Motor City impresario/vocalist Harvey Fuqua, the group gained traction that improved when Fuqua’s brother-in-law, Motown Records mogul Berry Gordy, acquired The Spinners in a deal with Tri-Phi Records. There followed several years of near-fame and show-biz reality as Motown, not satisfied with the band’s sales, put the men to work as road managers, chaperones, chauffeurs, and shipping clerks. In 1970, The bands’ fortunes changed in 1970 when they hit with “It’s a Shame” and again in 1971 with the Stevie Wonder-penned “We’ll Have It Made.” Signing with Atlantic in 1972 opened the door to a series of five Billboard Top 100 singles produced by Thom Bell, leading with the one-two of “I’ll Be Around” backed by “How Could I Let You Get Away.” The blended talents of Bell and the group scored further with “Could It Be I’m Falling in Love,” “One of a Kind (Love Affair),” and “Ghetto Child.” Lesser but still substantial hits presaged 1974’s blockbuster collaboration with Dionne Warwick, “Then Came You.” Other hits in this streak included “They Just Can’t Stop It (Games People Play)” and “The Rubberband Man.” The latter ‘70s saw the group lose cohesion as members fell to arguing and parted with Bell; even so, they returned to the studio in the ‘80s to lay down “Working My Way Back to You” and Willie Nelson’s “Funny How Time Slips Away,” along with the title soundtrack tune to the Mel Brooks sci-fi satire Spaceballs. Seemingly impervious to time and tumult, the group pressed on. In 2023 the Spinners were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Along the way, acrimony and mortality brought new faces and new voices but left intact the band’s essential qualities such that the group, now with no original members, is still out on the road. -- Michael Dolan
