The special quality of Fantaisie for Clarinet and Piano by Philippe Gaubert lies in the fact that it combines three worlds at once:
French Impressionist color, operatic lyricism and and dazzling instrumental virtuosity — all within a relatively short, highly concentrated piece.
Played by Anastasia Schmidlin and Denis Zhdanov, the clarinet “sings” like a human voice.
Gaubert was a flautist and conductor deeply immersed in French opera culture. In the Fantaisie, the clarinet is treated almost like a soprano or tenor voice: long-breathed melodic arcs, sensual phrasing, subtle rubato and speech-like flexibility.
Unlike many German Romantic clarinet works, this is less about heavy drama and more about elegance, perfume, light and seduction.
