Singer/songwriter BC Jean was the recent guest for an installment of The Recording Academy's 5 Questions With... series. Jean discussed her favorite GRAMMY moment, co-writing Beyoncé's "If I Were A Boy," musical influences, and advice for aspiring musicians, among other topics.
"There are not words to describe the feeling," said Jean on seeing Beyoncé perform "If I Were A Boy" live on the 52nd Annual GRAMMY Awards telecast in 2010. "It's unreal and it's probably the best thing that's ever happened to me."
Born in San Diego, Jean began writing songs incorporating the influence of artists such as Alanis Morissette, No Doubt, Queen, and Rod Stewart. Jean, along with producer/songwriter Toby Gad, co-wrote Beyoncé's "If I Were A Boy," which appears on Beyoncé's GRAMMY-nominated Album Of The Year, 2008's I Am... Sasha Fierce. Since signing with J Records in 2009, Jean has collaborated with a number of producers, including Max Martin (Katy Perry, Pink), the Matrix (Britney Spears) and Ryan Tedder (Beyoncé). In 2010 Jean released the single "Just A Guy," and has followed up with "I'll Survive You" and "Anyone" in 2011. Jean is currently working on her forthcoming debut album.
