After a long battle over film rights, Spider-Man fans were given an embarrassment of riches with not one, not two, but three different Spider-Man franchises with the last one taking place in the ever populated Marvel Cinematic Universe. Just like actors who have played James Bond there are people who have their favorite Peter Parker. Just like Bond, there is a big contingent who regard the first Peter as their Peter above all others, Tobey McGuire. McGuire brought that wide eyed optimism and innocence so key to the role of Peter Parker and became a charming and defining portrayal of the web swinging hero. Now with casting building up for the third MCU Spider-Man evidence of the multiverse is piling up with it.
We’ve already seen Raimi’s J Jonah Jameson re-appear in the MCU as the anchor of an online news channel. Then came the announcement that Jamie Foxx would revive his role of Electro from The Amazing Spider-Man series. Then Doctor Strange joined the movie and the Spider-verse rumors were off and running. This has included rumors that the former Spider-Man actors could appear in the upcoming Spider-Man movies. But would they just be the roles they had, or would they be other multiverse variations of their characters? What would happen if Tobey McGuire wasn’t Spider-Man but someone very important to who Spider-Man becomes? What if Tobey McGuire was...Uncle Ben? There are some interesting arguments that suggest that this is the role he is best suited to play. Let’s take a look.
