Why We Needed The Legend of Korra

It feels so good to be an Avatar fan. Both Avatar the Last Airbender AND Legen of Korra are on Netflix, and have been opened up to a whole new generation. A new breath of life flows through the fanbase and I for one could not be happier to have this many new people hop onto Avatar, easily Nickelodeon’s greatest show. When Legend of Korra was announced, my heart leapt up into my throat. A brand new Avatar Series, but not only that it was a whole new Avatar. The Legend of Korra had some big shoes to fill. Avatar left a huge mark on fans and it raised the bar for story based animation. While Legend of Korra is not perfect, we have Season 2 to thank for that, the world of Korra expands upon Avatar in so many ways. Everything has become modernized, from the technology to the way bending is approached and even the people. In Legend of Korra the four nations are more or less connected, especially with Republic City acting as the beacon for a united world. Additionally, a modern Avatar faced modern problems in the form of their villains. Each season had Korra face off against a new threat, which represented a modern problem society faces today. Whether it is Zaheer’s rampant anarchism to Kuvira’s fascism, Korra had to not only face the threat head on, but also with the repercussions of her actions and how the world might see her. What role does the Avatar play in a modern world where we are less focused on monarchs and more focused on international politics? Korra helped improve the world by asking these questions.
