The massive DC Fandome event delivered one awesome reveal after another, but the biggest was saved for the end of the day when Matt Reeves hosted a panel to discuss his new film, The Batman. After breaking down some juicy tidbits about his upcoming Batman movie, he surprised fans by revealing the first teaser for the hotly anticipated film. Even though he said only about 25% of the movie was done shooting, the trailer is packed with jaw-dropping moments and helps give us a sense of what the movie is going to be about, especially when it comes to the film’s main villain: The Riddler.
The Riddler was always a fascinating choice for a dark and gritty Batman film because it just felt like there wasn’t a way to do the character justice. How do you take a guy seriously when he likes to dress in green, wear question marks all over his body and has an ego so big he likes to leave riddles at the scenes of his crimes? But anyone who thought the Riddler couldn’t work in a darker Batman movie was probably just proven wrong. The teaser doesn’t give away a lot of information, but it does set up The Riddler’s character and what he wants from the city of Gotham. And surprisingly, he might be more similar to Batman than we ever expected!
So go ahead and check out the video below detailing everything that was revealed about the Riddler in The Batman’s first teaser. We’ll break down his possible motivations and his ultimate end goal, as well as examine how this new Batman film will work to create an entirely new subset of the DCEU, one that’s populated by not only Paul Dano’s Riddler, but also Zoe Kravitz’s Catwoman and Colin Farrell’s Penguin.
