Superman Lives is one of the most talked about unproduced superhero movies of all time. What started with ultra-geek Kevin Smith writing his own Superman movie soon morphed into a project directed by Tim Burton and starring Nicholas Cage as Clark Kent. Now that’s wild. But like every great superhero, this film has an epic origin story that you just have to hear to believe.
Superman has always been a difficult character to adapt to the big screen. Fans love Superman, but Superman movies tend to struggle a little bit. But could Tim Burton’s movie have changed all that? That’s something we’ll never know as studio interference as well as a multitude of problems shut this enormous movie down before it ever got started. Which is a shame because it sounds amazing. It would have been a deconstructionist take on Superman that was more in line with what Burton did to the Batman character back in 1989, but the movie would’ve been jam-packed with elements that would make any DC fan weep with joy. Not only was the movie set to adapt the famous Death of Superman comic arc, which meant seeing Doomsday on the big screen, but it also would’ve featured Brainiac turning into a gigantic mechanical spider creature at the end for a black-suited Superman to face off against and that just sounds like the best thing ever doesn’t it?
So this video is all about the history of Superman Lives. It will trace its humble beginnings where Kevin Smith met with eccentric producer Jon Peters, who allegedly told Smith three key things that had to be included in the movie, one of which was the giant spider, all the way to Tim Burton’s unique vision for the Superman character. It’s one of the best stories in Hollywood and at the end we’ll speculate on just what the state of the superhero movies would be like today if Superman Lives ever made it to screen.
