Whether you’re a fan or a detractor, there’s no question that the DC Extended Universe has stumbled out of the gate as it seems to have been playing catch up with the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Fans and critics have accused the DCEU of rushing its shared universe at the cost of quality compared to the juggernaut that the MCU has become. In one move on the tiny end of the DC live action world has changed everything, converting the DCEU’s weakness into its strength. The Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event for the Arrowverse on CW didn’t just cross over all of the Greg Berlanti shows, but it connected the Arrowverse to the cinematic DCEU. It didn’t stop there, though, it also connected all the way back to Tim Burton’s 1989 Batman. With rumors of Micheal Keaton returning to the role of Bruce Wayne for the DCEU, the term “Expanded Universe” has taken on a whole new meaning. With the success of movies like Shazam, Aquaman, and Wonder Woman, the DCEU’s fortunes have been turned around. The sequels to those movies have created excitement. Snyder will be releasing his cut of Justice League that includes DC’s Big Bad Darkseid on HBO Max next year, causing even more excitement. As the MCU figures out how to follow up a triumph like Avengers: Endgame, the DCEU is poised to have an even brighter future. Let’s take a look at what the extended universe means after the crossover in Crisis on Infinite Earths and what the news of the future means for the DCEU.
