It may have been a while since it was addressed in the show, but the end goal for any pirate to be crowned king is to find One Piece, Gol. D Rogers vast fortune and treasure. It is what started Luffy on his journey to be the next King of the pirates. It didn’t take long for Luffy and the Straw Hat Pirates to find out they were far from the only ones, and some of the top contenders are more powerful than he is, for now. There is a deep history of Gol D. Roger’s journey to becoming the king of the pirates. In his time he has taken on people like Whitebeard, who was thought to be the next pirate likely to be king until his death.

Even with Whitebeard gone, the world of One Piece is filled with characters who are just as strong, if not stronger than Gol. D Roger and could attain one piece. There is the current villain, Blackbeard, who stole Whitebeard’s devil fruit power to have two powers. Or it could be one of the remaining Yonko like Kaido or Shanks. Some of the most powerful characters aren’t even Pirates. There are people in the World Government who could rival Roger like Sengoku or Vice Admiral Aoikiji.
