Dragon Ball aired on television for the very first time on February 26th, 1986 shortly after the manga was published on September 19th, 1985. Since then Dragon Ball has been a tour de force and helped change the landscape of anime and manga forever. To this day people are still enjoying and consuming Dragon Ball content from Dragon Ball Z to Dragon Ball Super. Dragon Ball laid the groundwork for what would be the most recognizable anime figure of all time. Most people know Goku as the near-invincible Sayian warrior, but in Dragon Ball he was just a kid making his way through the world. On a quest to gather the seven Dragon Balls.
Dragon Ball started as a giant homage to the classic Chinese fable “Journey to the West”. Son Goku’s design and abilities were mostly inspired by Son Wukong, the Monkey King. Fans are familiar with the first episode, where Bulma meets Goku and they begin their journey to find the seven Dragon Balls. However, there are a few things even die-hard fans may have missed or don’t know about the very first episode of Dragon Ball. For example, did you know that Goku has a different name in the Harmony Gold dub released in 1989? In this dub he is named Zero instead of Goku. That is just one of the many variations and changes made to the dubs over the years, and what we are going to talk about in today’s video.
