The Incredible Hulk has been around since the early 1960s when the character was created by comic book geniuses Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Since the character’s introduction, fans have pondered one major question: how exactly does the Hulk keep his pants on when he transforms? Seriously, whatever Bruce Banner is wearing should be torn to shreds, right? All his other clothes are, so why not the pants? Even Stan Lee couldn’t figure out the answer to this question, but he sure did try to come up with an explanation.

It all started with the Comics Code Authority, which was vehemently opposed to anything even hinting at nudity in comic books. As a result, Stan Lee and Jack Kirby decided to make the Hulk’s pants as pronounced as possible. Purple is on the opposite end of the color spectrum from green. This would ensure the Comics Code Authority wouldn’t have any doubt about whether or not the Hulk was wearing pants.

As far as a scientific explanation goes, Stan the Man suggested that the Hulk’s incredible purple pants were made of the same unstable molecular structure that the Fantastic Four’s costumes were made out of. He went on to admit that while this was the explanation he ran with, he still never understood exactly how they worked. If not even Stan Lee knows how the Hulk’s pants work, perhaps there isn’t any hope for humanity after all. Regardless, let’s dig a little deeper to see if we can’t unlock this mystery.
