Could the Rules of Time Travel Keep Deadpool Out of the MCU?

Time travel can be a tricky proposition. The rules of time travel have varied from story to story and generally seem to be made up to serve the individual stories that they’re trying to tell. But what happens when two different time travel stories with incompatible sets of rules try to co-exist? It’s an entirely different kind of paradox that they face. That’s what might happen as the MCU and Fox’s Mutant properties prepare to merge, especially when it comes to the Merc with the Mouth, Deadpool. The latest Deadpool entry as well as Avengers: Endgame have both dealt with time travel in very different ways. With Deadpool and his X-Force of Colossus, Negasonic Teenage Warhead, and Domino they faced a time traveling Cable looking to kill a young child who would grow up to be a villain. In the MCU where Josh Brolin also plays a time skipping villain, that kind time travel doesn’t work. In the MCU time travel creates a new timeline, but the person’s past cannot be changed by their future selves. Could this mechanical incompatibility create a paradox that would keep Deadpool out of the MCU proper, or does that just mean that he’ll exist in an alternate timeline that is visitable by the mainstream MCU heroes? Or does this provide the kind of out that allows the Deadpool franchise do what it does best, stand on the sidelines and blow raspberries at the mainstream heroes? We’ll explore how the rules of time travel could affect Deadpool and the MCU.
