Being the mentor or parent of a superhero is a risky position to be in. Most of the time, you have to die in order to fulfil your purpose and motivate the hero into action. That was true of Ho Yinsen, Abraham Erksine and poor Uncle Ben, but while Uncle Ben got that iconic catchphrase, there’s been another big influence on Peter Parker, your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, and that’s his Aunt May.
The only legal guardian left after both his parents and uncle died, she’s been keeping young Peter on the straight and narrow by doling out life advice and leading by example. Whether it’s her work with F.E.A.S.T., accidently working for Mister Negative or that time she almost married Otto Octvius, otherwise known as Doctor Octopus, Aunt May’s sweet and forgiving heart has both put her in harm's way and put kindness and forgiveness on display for her vigilante nephew, but she had a life of adventure on her own before Peter started swinging from webs. From a love triangle with gangsters like Johnny Jerome or retcon romances with both Ben and Richie Parker, to a rough childhood, May has gotten around, and that’s just in one reality. In others, she’s swung from her own webbings as Spider-Ma’am or wielded the Power Cosmic as the Golden Oldie. In both the pages of the Marvel Comics and on the big screen, Aunt May has a lot more going on than you’d think.
