Avatar: Lavabending Can't Be Learned

Our video published about a month ago entitled Avatar: Sub-element Bending is Actually Mixed Bending got his fair share of reactions. In that video I suggested the idea that some bending skills like ice or metal were actually mixed bending between two types of element. In the case of icebending, I argued that the skill uses water and air, while in the case of metal, fire and earth. Today, I want to share another finding that works in the same vein. According to the Avatar Extras, which was an event hosted by Nicktoons where pop-up information would give facts about the show, lavabending is actually a mix between two elements: fire and earth.
There’s more theory going around that builds up on that idea. It is believed that one of the ways for someone to bend lava is to be the child of a Fire Nation native, and an Earth Kingdom person. The first people that come to mind are of course Bolin and Mako. Bolin who suddenly discovered he could lavabend by chance makes me wonder if he didn’t have the power within himself all along. Contrary to other types of element bending, he did not have to practice for it, it just came naturally when he was in a dangerous situation. Lavabending is also reserved for a few select Avatars who either were born in the Fire Nation or the Earth Kingdom.
In today’s Avatar video, I will go over what makes a lavabender, how it’s a mixed elemental bending art, and what it could mean for future benders living in Republic City.
