There are many Naruto villains who get a lot of attention from fans. Characters like Orochimaru, Itachi Uchiha, Madara Uchiha, Obito Uchiha, sometimes Sasuke Uchiha and Kaguya are all considered to be some of the greatest villains in anime. The one Naruto villain who is often ignored despite the fact that it is arguably the main antagonist of the first two series is one that has a less obvious approach. It prefers to stay in the shadows, subtly nudging events here and there over the centuries to complete the mission it was created for. That’s right, I’m referring to the one and only Black Zetsu.

Born as the living embodiment of Kaguya’s will as she was being sealed into the moon at the dawn of Shinobi history, Black Zetsu has spent centuries subtley crafting and manipulating world events to eventually lead to Princess Kaguya’s return. This journey began with the creation of the Uchiha clan, the manipulation of Madara Uchiha who believed Black Zetsu to be his servant, Obito Uchiha’s corruption and renaming into the new Madara and a global plot that would take the lives of thousands.

This all lead, of course, to the creation of the Akatsuki, an organization Zetsu served in and helped create from the ground up. From there, they manipulated world events until the Fourth Shinobi World War directly led to Kaguya’s return and the near end of Shinobi everywhere. Unfortunately, Black Zetsu never did learn how to correctly estimate Naruto Uzumaki.
