10 Avatar State Moments

One moment that always gets fans going wild is when Aang or Korra trigger the Avatar State. When the Avatar’s eyes start glowing white, it means business. By channeling the full power of the light spirit Raava, the Avatar can increase the power of their bending to an extremely high level. While this is quite the effective power against amazingly strong enemies like Zaheer or Fire Lord Ozai, it can also be quite destructive if not properly mastered. When Roku first succeeded in triggering the Avatar State he destroyed half of a temple, and caused a volcanic eruption. So the Avatar must beforehand make sure they have mastered all four elements adequately before even attempting to enter the Avatar State. Things were even more dire for the Water Avatar Kuruk when first entered the Avatar State and drowned a whole island, which almost took the lives of his friends the airbender Kelsang, and the earthbender Jianzhu.

While I’m sure there is still a lot more to be explored when it comes to the Avatar State, Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra have shown us amazing scenes featuring the OP state. Linked to strong negative emotions at first, Aang almost lost it a few times in the Southern Air Temple when he found Gyatso's remains, and again in the Si Wong Desert when Appa was kidnapped. Korra went into an unstoppable rage when chasing Zaheer after being poisoned giving little to no care about collateral damage. The Avatar State is often what will save the day, but can also mean great catastrophe if used unwisely.
