It’s just not nearly as fun to be a superhero if you don’t have any proper enemies - and vice versa.
As heroes populate the pop cultural landscape for decades upon decades, there is always pressure to come up with new ne’er-do-wells for them to butt heads with, and sometimes they end up becoming mainstays of the cast. Or, if they are really lucky and make a big impression, mess with the hero enough or function as a perfect shadow archetype, they manage to elevate themselves to the status of archenemy!
But sometimes, the pieces just don’t fit together.
Maybe there’s a power mismatch. Maybe they operate within completely different corners of each other's universe. Maybe their personalities don’t align. Maybe there’s just something about their overall theme that doesn’t jive well with the hero. Or maybe writers just quickly grow bored of them and they end up languishing in obscurity. What is an out-of-work supervillain to do?
Try greener pastures, of course! There are so many heroes out there after all that if one isn’t your ideal enemy, then someone else probably is - and you may end up finding that fame and fortune in evildoing you didn’t quite get where you started!
That’s what this video is about - supervillains who had to break free of the hero they were created to face in order to gain proper notoriety and make their most well known appearances! There are a few famous examples… and a few rather odd ones!
