An idea submitted to Marvel Comics for a contest, by a 22 year old fan named Randy Schueller, the black Spider-Man suit would originally be worn by Spider-Man during the events of Secret Wars. This black costume would serve as much more than an alternate cool look, but it would go on to become one of the most iconic supervillains in all of pop culture, known as Venom. Comic books, cartoons, video games, live action movies, Venom is Spider-Man’s greatest rival and nemesis and the two have been intertwined across years and the multiverse. Not only has Peter Parker become a host to the Venom Symbiote, but a plethora of other characters have as well. A species of inorganic, amorphous extraterrestrials, the symbiotes were created by the God of Darkness, Knull. Seen in the Marvel Cinematic Universe during Thor: Love and Thunder, Gorr the God Butcher’s blade called All-Black the Necrosword is the very first symbiote that Knull ever created. Furthermore, Venom has a film franchise of his own and has even crossed over into the MCU, as seen during the mid-credits scene of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Before the Tom Hardy starring movies, the last time we saw a live action Venom was in the form of Topher Grace’s Eddie Brock during Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3.
