🇳🇱 Marker Wadden in Flevoland | Eurovision 2020 Travel

Ahead of Eurovision 2020, we travel to De Marker Wadden — an artificial, man-made archipelago in Flevoland's Markermeer (a large lake in the north of the country). The islands were created from sand, clay and silt dredged from the lake. But from here nature took over and is being allowed to develop at its own pace. Hundreds of birds have naturally colonised the islands. These include avocets, oyster catchers and spoon-bills. We tour the island and climb the Stilt-Walker Watchtower for some amazing views.

Of special note:
* Bikes and other forms of transport are prohibited
* Marker Wadden is still developing and visitors must beware of quicksand
* Kite surfing, windsurfing and flying drones are prohibited
* Two guardians / volunteers stay on the night overnight to keep watch — no one else is allowed on the island after hours
