Toontje Lager was one of the most popular Dutch pop-rock bands of the early 1980s. Formed in Breda, the Netherlands, in 1978, the original members were Erik Mesie (lead vocals, born April 20, 1954), Edwin “Pap” Geelhoed (bass guitar), Bert Hermelink (keyboards), Gerard de Braconier (drums), and Jean-Paul Hulsbosch (guitar). The band’s humorous name was inspired by Dutch comic character Toontje Lager. The band achieved national fame with their 1981 breakthrough single “Stiekem Gedanst” (on our channel) which reached No. 2 in the Dutch Top 40. Other major hits included “Ben Jij Ook Zo Bang” and "Net als in de Film" (on our channel). Toontje Lager split up in 1984, although reunions followed later. Singer Erik Mesie continued performing solo and occasionally reunited with former band members for anniversary concerts.

TopPop was the first regular dedicated pop music TV show in the Dutch language area. Dutch broadcaster AVRO aired the programme weekly, from 1970 to 1988. Presenter Ad Visser hosted the show for its first fifteen years.
