Praise the Plague - Devourer

Using a light touch and punky DIY approach, EKP create a unique and wobbly mix of dreamy 60s pop and melodic folk.Their songs are warm and romantic, containing melancholy — using simple phrases to describe complex emotions and in this way provide consolation to the listener. The performances are impetuous, almost refusing to hit the mark in a standard way; the pop physics employed by EKP make it all sound spontaneous... think Belle & Sebastian writing session. This approach belies a continental sophistication also present in the songs, bringing to mind a primitive version of Squeeze.

Ella Josephine and Tim are Berliners; Jay is in NYC. Having spent together a few magical weeks on Fire Island in summer 2016, they started playing music together. The main appeal was that they liked each other so much; another was the switching up of their usual band roles and swapping instruments. And a third appeal was working fast — with the few days they would have together in NYC or Berlin, they had to write and record quickly. The lyrics maintain this sense of immediacy and are not overwrought.

This is a genuine affectation — Ella Josephine is the touring vocalist in the legendary German band Ton Steine Scherben; Tim runs the famous Trixx Studio in Berlin and plays with Jay in the recording and performance project of Wolfgang Tillmans; in NYC, Jay accompanies psych folk legend Ed Askew, has art pop band The Doilies and contributes keys to drag-fronted power pop band Josephine Network.

Fire Island Street is their first single, released on Jay’s cassingle imprint Paris Tapes. The hazy lyrics include an appearance by Casey Spooner and evoke the boardwalk in the Fire Island Pines neighborhood.
