In the summer of 2020, we asked our friend and talented filmmaker Lujain Jo to film us playing the entirety of The Good Soldier in the garden around Pascal’s childhood home.
We wrote and recorded that album between 2018 and the summer of 2019. A lot of it is about how home, or the idea of home is our shield against the outside world and all its uncertainties. And that theme translated into the visual: the photo from the cover of Rachel Tabet’s (the photographer)’s home, the music video for Fossilized, shot in Marwan’s apartment, and the ending of Dead End was shot around Julia’s old house.
Almost a year later, it feels strange to revisit. The last few months were marked by an economic and financial collapse in the country, an uprising against our corrupt ruling class, a pandemic, and finally the explosion on August 4th that destroyed half of Beirut, took hundreds of lives, and put us all in a state of hopelessness and fear we could’ve never imagined. The blast was a symbol of our political leaders' corruption, greed and incompetence literally exploding in our faces.
The apocalypse was always present in our songs, but when it actually happened, our homes could not shield us from the disaster. We were attacked in our safe spaces, and we're still picking up the pieces.
We're lucky we have music, after all.
