"'Through the Fire' was the third single from Chaka Khan's 1984 Platinum album 'I Feel For You'. At the time of release, 'Through the Fire' was somewhat overshadowed by the runaway success of the album's title track, a major hit single with an all star lineup of Stevie Wonder on harmonica and verses from Grandmaster Melle Mel, making it one of the first pop crossover songs to feature a rapper. 'Through the Fire' however went on to enjoy a second lease of life in the mid 2000s after being sampled by Kanye West on his 2003 breakthrough single 'Through the Wire'. Although the Chicago producer/rapper had already tasted commercial success with production work for artists including Jay-Z and Nas among others, 'Through the Wire' marked Kanye's arrival as a rapper and set the scene for his 2004 multi-platinum album 'The College Dropout'. The single introduced Kanye's trademark 'Chipmunk Soul' sound to the mainstream, with Chaka Khan's vocals having been sped up to a racing high pitch. The sample is also an example of 'Mondegreen', the practice of quoting phrases or vocals to alter their meaning, in this case 'Through the Fire' to 'Through the Wire', in reference to Kanye's jaw being wired after a near fatal car crash. Chaka Khan's song has been sampled and covered 49 times, thanks in no small part to the popularity of 'Through the Wire'." - _WhoSampled_
