Cheap Trick is an American rock band formed in 1973 in Rockford, Illinois, who rose to fame with their high-energy performances and catchy blend of power pop and hard rock. Their international breakthrough came in 1979 with the live version of “I Want You to Want Me”, recorded during a legendary concert at the Nippon Budokan in Japan. While the original 1977 studio version failed to chart significantly, the live rendition became a massive hit. It reached number 1 in Japan and The Netherlands, number 2 in Canada and number 7 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. Guitarist Rick Nielsen: “The Japanese crowd gave us wings,” Nielsen recalled. The Budokan recording (April 28 and 30, 1978) of the song turned into a rock anthem, propelling Cheap Trick into global stardom. In 2012 they released a Christmas version of the song” I Want You For Christmas”. Other hits of Cheap Trick are “Ain’t That a Shame”, “Surrender”, “If You Want My Love”, “Dream Police” and “Stop This Game”. This recording was made by TROS TV Program TROS TOP 50 at Paradiso in Amsterdam, the Netherlands and broadcast on March 24, 1979.
