The Commodores were a successful R&B/funk band known for hits like "Brick House," "Easy," and "Three Times a Lady." When co-lead singer Lionel Richie left in 1982 to pursue his solo career, many critics doubted the group's future. The Commodores, however, successfully retooled, bringing in new singer J.D. Nicholas (formerly of Heatwave). In 1985 they topped the charts again with “Nightshift” a heartfelt tribute to two recently deceased soul legends, Marvin Gaye and Jackie Wilson, who both passed away in 1984. The primary lead vocals are sung by original drummer Walter Orange, with Nicholas taking the second verse and both sharing the choruses."Nightshift" became their biggest post-Richie hit and won a Grammy Award. It peaked at number 3 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and the UK Singles Chart, and hit number 1 on the US Hot Black Singles chart and the charts in the Netherlands and Belgium. This recording is from Dutch program TROS TV Show and broadcasted on March 3, 1985.
