Villains come in a all sizes, shapes and motivations. Some are after power, some are after money and some want revenge on a world that simply won’t acknowledge their greatness. The most compelling villains, however, have a legit beef with the heroes that they fight which gives their stories and schemes that much more weight.

Those are the rivalries that stick, when the hero feels their pain or understands their goals, but is unable to sign off on their methods. These are the rivalries that run deep and help reveal who the heroes really are. Their stories cut the deepest and their defeats feel like defeats for the heroes too.
