Comic book adaptations generally have a rough road of it when trying to cross over from panels to pixels. Not every translation survives the process. But some adaptations are so successful that they end up circling back and exerting their influence on the source material. Bruce Timm’s adaptation of Batman influenced by the Gothic look of Tim Burton’s Batman movie ended up setting the tone for the caped crusader for a generation of Batfans. The series was popular enough that it redefined old characters like Mr. Freeze and added new and instantly popular characters like Harley Quinn. In 1997 the production team got what seemed like a terrible note from the studio: They wanted a teenage Bruce Wayne. The only problem is, teenage Bruce Wayne was wandering the world learning punching and kicking and being a detective and definitely not being Batman. Timm and Co. came up with a better solution. Super old Bruce Wayne and an all-new teenage Batman in the form of Terry McGinnis. Unlike Bruce Wayne who was all Batman all the time and just walked around pretending to still be Bruce Wayne, McGinnis was McGinnis with all his teenage problems and hang-ups taking on the mantle of Batman to help continue the work of old man Wayne who couldn’t do the punching and kicking himself. This is the story of Terry McGinnis and how he came to be.
